Hospice Society of the Columbia Valley - Support Services

Provided by Hospice Society of the Columbia Valley

Provides a supportive and compassionate care to individuals and their families during and after the end of life experience.
Nav-CARE’s: Specially-trained volunteers help improve the lives of people living with declining health by creating connections to community services and resources and providing caring, consistent emotional support.

Anticipatory Grief Support: All programs are offered free of charge. Family members, spouses and friends who are anticipating the death of a loved one may need support to navigate the end-of-life journey. The Hospice Society provides visitors for the client to talk about their loved one, share stories and pictures and discuss the challenges they are currently facing.

End of Life Support:
  • End of Life visits: Every client and their family have a carefully selected team of qualified volunteers who are dedicated to “walking” with a client and their family through the end-of-life process. Volunteer Visitors meet clients in their homes, in the hospital, in extended care, or in residential facilities.
  • Vigil Service: Volunteers provide round-the-clock support for clients in their last hours of life (last 24 – 48 hours of life).

Bereavement Visitation:
  • In the Home: Qualified bereavement volunteers visit clients as needed. The length of each visit is agreed upon between the client and the visitor. It is an opportunity for clients to talk about their loved one, share stories and pictures and discuss the challenges they are currently facing.
  • Alternate location: For some people, it is more comfortable to meet outside the home. This is the same program as above, the only difference is that the visit is in a location more comfortable to the client, such as a coffee shop, the park, or the Hospice office; the choice is left to the client.
  • Bereavement Support Group: The Hospice Society hosts a twelve-week support group based on Dr. Alan Wolfelt’s book “Understanding Your Grief”. Through the process of sharing and storytelling led by a qualified facilitator, the group explores the ten essential touchstones for finding hope and healing hearts.

Community Outreach: Provides information to the general public and strives to increase awareness and understanding of end-of-life challenges, bereavement, and advanced care planning. The program also offers on-site customized workshops to various employers and their staff to help understand the end-of-life and bereavement process.

Resources Library: The Hospice office has a lending library and other free resources available to the public.
